Menetes

Menetes is an amphitheatrically built town on the slopes of a hill. It is located 7 km. (4.3 mi.) SW of Pigadia at an altitude of 350 m. (1150 ft.). Its 450 inhabitants take special pride in their church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, which is celebrated on August 15^th. It is situated on top of the ‘Holy Rock’ facing all the homes of the village on the edge of town. From the cliff side of the ‘Holy Rock’ it is possible to witness a spectacular view of the capital Pigadia below and the whole bay of Vrondis. It is one of the largest villages of the island. It has a small museum (view below) with various Karpathian artifacts. There are numerous taverns on the main road and more a few steps above the main road.

 The area of Stavri is located on the main road after Menetes going towards Arkasa. It is an area rich in vineyards and olive groves. The 14^th century monastery of Agios Mamas (view below) is located in the area called Exiles, slightly off the main road to Arkasa.

The area of Ammoopi is one of the most popular and most developed tourist areas of the island next to the capital Pigadia. The main beaches are called, ‘Mikri Ammoopi’, ‘Pera Ammos’ (view below), and ‘Votsalakia’. They all have relatively shallow waters and very fine ‘golden’ sand. There are numerous hotels and taverns, located on the beach front and also along the main road leading up to the area of Lakki.

The area of Afiartis is reached by the main road from Pigadia past Ammoopi. Beaches such as the secluded ‘Diakoftis’ and also ‘Makri Gialos’ provide wind surfing (view below) conditions amongst the finest in the Mediterranean. The island’s airport is located in this area at a distance of 15 km. (9.3 mi.) from Pigadia.
