Omonia of Aperi
Omonia of Aperi was the first and thus now the oldest educational welfare and advancement and cultural organization formed by Karpathians residing outside Karpathos. It was originally created in Khartoum, Sudan then later in New York, and later in Wheeling, West Virginia and lastly in Aperi, Karpathos and Attica in the area of Athens.
The first organization named Omonia by Karpathians from the village of Aperi was in Khartoum, Sudan on 1906. The first Omonia in the US was formed in New York on 1932. The first major project was funded by money sent by the Omonia organization in the US to build the first and for many years the only high school in Karpathos. The project was completed on 1932. A branch in Wheeling, West Virginia was established on 1952. In 1979 the Omonia branch in Aperi with its dance group, was the first presentation of Karpathian customs on the television. A branch in the Athens area was established in 1902 called Omonia Attikis.
