Volada
Volada is situated 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) after Aperi. The town was built between the mountains at an altitude of 450 m. (1480 ft.), which blocks the view to the ocean.
The church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary locally called ‘Plagia’ is located in the very center of the town and is celebrated on September 8th. Two taverns are located on the main road in town.
After starting the climb from Volada, we pass through an area called ‘Pini’ where Karpathian wine is produced in the area’s vineyards.
When we reach the plateau of ‘Lastos’ more excellent local wineries are found. The monastery of Archangel Michael is located in Lastos and is celebrated on November 8th. From Volada we can reach the highest mountain on the island, Kali Limni at 1215m (3990 feet), which is also the second highest of the Dodecanese Islands. ‘Kali Limni’ in Greek translates to ‘Good Lake’. From the peak, a unique and breath taking view of the whole island can be seen. It is said that Lastos was in prehistoric times a lake, formed by the water from the springs of Kali Limni. There are still a few farmers' cottages called 'stavlos' in Lastos, mainly used during the harvest season. Click here to go back
